A sequel, Hollow Knight: Silksong, is currently in development. By December 2020, the game had sold 3 million copies. Hollow Knight received widespread acclaim from critics, who highlighted the game's worldbuilding, character design, and combat mechanics, with emphasis on the extensive story. After release, Team Cherry supported the game with four expansions. It was released for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux in early 2017 and for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One in 2018. Development was partially funded through a Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign that raised over A$57,000 by the end of 2014. Inspirations for the game include Faxanadu, Metroid, Zelda II: The Adventure of Link, and Mega Man X.

Team Cherry wanted to create a game inspired by older platformers that replicated the explorational aspects of its influences. The concept behind Hollow Knight was originally conceived in 2013 in the Ludum Dare game jam. Players have the opportunity to unlock new abilities as they explore each location, along with pieces of lore and flavor text that are spread throughout the kingdom. The game is set in diverse subterranean locations, and it features friendly and hostile bug-like characters and numerous bosses. The Knight explores Hallownest, a fallen kingdom plagued by a supernatural disease. In the game, the player controls the Knight, a nameless insectoid warrior. …though there’s definitely another Nintendo Direct happening this month.Hollow Knight is a 2017 Metroidvania action-adventure game developed and published by independent developer Team Cherry.

Until then, I’ll do my best to stop hoping to see Silksong again soon. Like Elden Ring’s 2021 Summer Game Fest, I think it will be worth the wait when Silksong re-emerges. I want to be surprised over and over again, like I was in the first game, as I stumble into new areas. I want Silksong to keep the same mystery I felt in Hollow Knight: I don’t really want to know how big the world will be or what kind of enemies I’ll run into. When Silksong comes out, I expect it to make a bigger splash than the Metroid sequel, which took 20 years to make.īut when will this happen? As agonizing as the wait goes, I’m fine maintaining Team Cherry’s development blog or working away without the distraction of tweeting art or screenshots every few weeks. Metroid Dread kicked off a lot of comparisons as well, and I don’t think it’s too controversial to say that Hollow Knight’s combat, art, and level design have been cut up. I see a discussion thread from someone new to me playing this for the first time, and the takeaway is usually: I heard Hollow Knight was cool, but I didn’t think it would be This Good. Since 2019, while Team Cherry has been working hard on a sequel, Hollow Knight’s reputation has only continued to grow. We are closing the time the Elden Ring spent in silence. Since then, nothing-a year and a half without scraps of new information. Then it was quiet for a year, until our sister publication Edge magazine ran a cover feature on Silksong (opens in new tab) in December 2020. It makes sense: Hollow Knight: Silksong was announced in February 2019 and was shown a couple of times that year. It certainly feels like the Elden Ring subreddit after another disappointment, though there aren’t many poor souls posting in pain. Hollow Knight: Silksong has now reached a similar position. It kept its footage completely under wraps, and every Gamescom, Tokyo Games Show, Game Awards, and other similar event stirred the Elden Ring subreddit into an optimistic-then despair (opens in new tab)-hysteria. What really drove players crazy was that during those two years, FromSoftware barely said anything about the Elden Ring. Only two years! (The indie game routine, shown again today (opens in new tab), has been in development for a decade.) But that compares to how quickly FromSoftware announced and then released its previous Dark Souls game. It was announced at E3 in June 2019, and finally resurfaced at Summer Game Fest in June 2021. In the grand scheme of things, the Elden Ring hadn’t been quiet for all that long. Time for Geoff Kegley Back to Gamer Jail (Opens in new tab)And it’s time for me to learn my lesson: Expecting to see Hollow Knight: Silksong is now as silly and painful as waiting to see Elden Ring was the last few years. Later A Twitter Exchange (opens in new tab) Between Geoff Keighley and a Hollow Knight marketing rep, I was pretty sure we’d see Hollow Knight: Silksong appear on the show, perhaps even as the big finale. I should have known better than to be nominated for a particular game to show up at a big press conference like today’s Summer Game Fest, but I did it anyway.
